Danish schools endeavour to combine theory and practice and emphasize a high educational level while still securing an environment where everybody thrives. The school environment is also characterized by a very informal relationship between teachers and their students.
Many schools have kindergartens for children aged 3-6 attached to the school as well as after-school clubs where children spend the afternoons doing creative, sports or educational activities.
In this program you have the opportunity to work as a volunteer in a typical school in Denmark. It is a great chance to test or practice your teaching abilities, to gain experience working in a school environment and to learn how to interact with children and young people. You will also learn about the Danish way of teaching and learning which is probably very different from the one you have experienced yourself.
Schools for children aged 5 to 15
Your volunteer tasks typically include:
- Assisting teachers in language classes or other subjects for which you have an interest
- Helping out with various practical tasks, e.g. in the library or outdoor
- Assisting in the kindergarten/after-school club with indoor and outdoor activities
- Taking part in the arrangement of special events and activities at the school
- Sharing you cultural background and language with the children
Secondary education (gymnasiums) for young people aged 15 to 19
In those schools you will work as an assistant teacher in your native language or another language at which you are good. You will also assist teachers in other relevant subjects – e.g. subjects in which you have special qualifications or particular interest – or help staff with various other types of tasks.
For both types of schools your tasks and responsibilities will depend on your interests and skills. You will be working closely with one of the teachers, who will support and guide you.
You are welcome to indicate in your application which type of school you would prefer.
You will work 30-37 hours per week including your language lessons. You will be part of the staff group and typically take part in staff meetings.
